Berlin, 1921. Der exzentrische Regisseur Friedrich Murnau beginnt mit der Arbeit an seinem Vampirfilm "Nosferatu". Da es ihm wichtig ist, den Film so realistisch wie möglich zu gestalten, fährt er für die Dreharbeiten an Originalschauplätze und engagiert einen seltsamen Schauspieler namens Max Schreck für die Titelrolle. Aufgrund seines komischen Verhaltens erweckt Schreck bei den anderen Schauspielern und Mitarbeitern bald den Eindruck, es handle sich bei ihm um einen echten Vampir.
