Im Jahr 2020 gelingt es einer Gruppe von Astronauten unter Leitung von Luke Graham, zum Mars zu fliegen und erfolgreich auf der Oberfläche des roten Planeten zu landen. Gleich beim ersten Erkundungsgang geraten sie jedoch in einen heftigen unnatürlichen Wirbelsturm, und es gelingt Luke gerade noch einen Hilferuf in Richtung Erde abzuschicken. Dort wird eilig eine Rettungsmannschaft zusammengestellt, die hinterher reisen und nach Überlebenden suchen soll. Mit an Bord auf dem beschwerlichen Flug sind Commander Woody Blake und seine Frau Terri, Co-Pilot Jim McConnell sowie der Techniker Phil Ohlmyer. Als die zweite Raumfähre endlich den Mars erreicht, machen die Astronauten eine unglaubliche Entdeckung.
