Für die Kaiserpinguine gibt es nichts schöneres als Singen und so nimmt der Gesang eine zentrale Rolle bei der Partnerfindung ein. Das Ehepaar Memphis und Norma Jean ist davon nicht sonderlich begeistert, da ihr Sohn Mumble zwar ein begnadeter Stepptänzer aber dafür ein miserabler Sänger ist. Aus diesem Grund wird er schließlich aus der Gemeinschaft ausgestoßen und muss sich fortan allein zurechtfinden. Zum Glück trifft er auf eine Gruppe "normaler" Pinguine, die von seinem Tanz begeistert sind und ihn sofort bei sich aufnehmen.
