Australien, kurz vor dem Ausbruch des zweiten Weltkriegs: Lady Sarah Ashley, eine englische Adelige, hat den beschwerlichen Weg von England genommen, um einige Dinge mit ihrem Mann zu klären, die ihre Ehe betreffen. Auf dem fünften Kontinent jedoch gerät sie in einen viel größeren Konflikt als sie es sich erträumt hat. Nachdem mit dem wortkargen Viehtreiber Drover endlich auf der abgelegenen Rinderfarm angekommen ist, ist ihr Mann ermordet worden und der Rinderbaron King Carney will sich die Besitztümer und den Viehbestand einverleiben. Weil ihr Personal zum Teil von Carney gekauft wurde, engagiert sie Drover, um eine große Herde quer durch das australische Outback zu treiben, um Carney sein Monopol zu versauen...
