Nach einer wahren Geschichte: Eine junge Uganderin findet in Mira Nairs Drama durch das Schachspiel einen Ausweg aus den Slums. - Die zehnjährige Phiona (Madina Nalwanga) wächst in einem Slum der ugandischen Hauptstadt Kampala ohne Hoffnung auf eine bessere Zukunft auf. Bis sie den Sozialarbeiter Robert Katende (David Oyelowo) trifft, der ihr das Schachspiel beibringt. Phiona erweist sich schnell als großes Talent und besiegt viel erfahrenere Gegner, auch wenn ihre Mutter (Lupita Nyong'o) zunächst wenig davon hält. Bald reist Phiona sogar zu Turnieren im Sudan und in Russland.
